We'll see Debbie again down the line, but her inclusion in this season just gave us another example of this show having a rather roundabout tone. Wolves were the "big deal" this season and it's just a shame that they couldn't turn it into something rewarding. Brit Morgan's Debbie Pelt was, at times, appropriately deplorable, but again, her story just fizzled out. Joe Manganiello was serviceably statuesque as Alcide, James Frain was occasionally fun as Franklin and Lindsay Pulsipher was confusingly unappealing as Crystal.

He also really brought a sense of history and to the vampiric goings-on and lent that world a much needed aristocratic boost. O'Hare managed to spice up the proceedings in a way that none of the other new characters could. The true shining beacon of this season was Dennis O'Hare's Russell Edgington, as I'm usually a sucker for erudite, sophisticated villains who can turn ferocious and blood-thirsty at the drop of a hat. But it still feels like, as with so many of the other stories on the series, the writers don't have a clear cut idea of where they want to take her. We'll get a "reboot" of her next year, and it will be interesting to see if people will be willing to watch as she tries to, once again, turn over a new leaf. Likewise, Tara has become, over the past couple years, a grating character that fans have tired of – even leading her to have a somewhat "meta" scene where she tells Sam about how she doesn't have a lot of fans. We'd barely, as viewers, even really gotten to know them as a couple. Even though it was a plot point in the books, it might just not have been time to fully break up Bill and Sookie.

Characters on the TV series may also, depending on the actor's performance and overall serendipity, strike a very different chord with viewers than they do in the books. Storylines get started and then forgotten about. Unfortunately, following the story beats, and whims, of the book series does not make for satisfying television. It just, like the True Blood season finales, bleeds over into the beginning of the next book, or season as it were. No one book truly stands on its own, and the ending of each book doesn't give the readers any true sense of finality. Unfortunately, the Charlane Harris book series is filled with a ton of meandering plotlines that all sort of blend together to produce one long story with very little payoff. As most who've read the books have noticed, things on the HBO series are "different, but the same." People usually wind up where they wind up in the books, just taking an alternate, more elaborate route to get there. There's a tricky line that this series has to walk in trying to appease both fans of the book series and a TV audience who just wants a good, gripping TV series. As per usual, True Blood managed to get us excited about a number of things mid-season, only to fumble the ball in the endzone.

Holly and Arlene entered into a pagan-witch blood pact, it seemed to go awry, and then we never learned anything more about it. King Russell promised to eat our children, and then he didn't. There were wolves, and then there weren't. Note: There are spoilers for the entirety of True Blood: Season 3 in this review.
